Why would the Angels let Guerrero a first ballot hall of famer go and sign broken down Matsui?

I know Guerrero has bad knees. But doesn't Matsui have bad knees to? Guerrero is hitiing .340 and looks easily to drive in more than a hundred runs. Matsui is batting close to .200 and looks washed up. Matsui is making more money than Guerrero. The Angels are insane. Why are not general manager's fired more for making stupid decisions like this. Any Opinions?

  1. he had a bad season in 2009, and he's just getting off to a good start, that's it. matsui is young(well kinda) and is getting better not worse
  2. By coincidence, Guerrero and Matsui were see as declining and risks by their '09 teams. Unsigned by the Angels and Yankees, both entered the free agent market. The Angels took a chance (risk) with Matsui (the '09 WS MVP). At the same time, the Rangers accepted the risk of Guerrero. So, as you point out, the losers so far are the Angels. GM's do not make decisions like this on their own. In the Angels case, its owner, Arte Moreno, had a definite say and gave the OK to not pursue Vladie and go for Godzilla instead.
  3. "...Guerrero a first ballot hall of famer go..." Don't bet the farm on that. Many players, with better credentials than Guerrero, didn't make it on the first ballot. He's not the best fielding outfielder to come down the road. In fact, his best position is Designated Hitter. Errors, 123, FLDG PCT .964. That won't make people forget Roberto Clemente. Sarge
